Fishing for salmon, grayling, pike, and perch with 24-hour daylight! This is truly an amazing experience above the Arctic Circle.

Imagine looking out over the beautiful river where insects dance abundantly above the water, and the graylings try to catch them for lunch. Or picture one of the many remote lakes, deep in the endless forests, where a pike strikes your lure or streamer at the end of your line. Or think of the midnight sun that never sets above the endless rapids of the mighty Muonio River, where your dry fly drifts through the pool, waiting for that hungry salmon to come along and make your day perfect! It doesn’t get better than this!

Fishing in Lapland is an absolute bucket list item for many anglers. Endless forests, rivers, and lakes, kilometer after kilometer of winding streams and impressive rivers. Magnificent wildlife such as bears, moose, reindeer, eagles, beavers, and more contribute to the beauty and experience of this place. The Tornio river system, with its 540 km length, is the longest free-flowing river in Europe. It flows southward from the northern mountains to the Baltic Sea. There are no dams, power plants, or constructions hindering this long, free, and wild river. It offers a perfect mix of calm sections and faster rapids ideal for the local fish species.

All in all, you can catch salmon, grayling, pike, and perch, and you decide what you want to fish for. This can be done with either fly or lure. There are a few simple rules for fishing in this beautiful and fish-rich river system:

  • Catch & Release only
  • Only single and barbless hooks
  • Be on time to book your trip, as the number of permits per day is limited!

This river system forms the border between Sweden and Finland. On an island in the part of the river called Muonio, you will find this incredible fishing location. With Sweden on one side and Finland on the other, there are abundant fishing spots in the surrounding lakes and rivers.

We organize high-quality fishing trips at this location with a complete package, including professional guidance to give you the best chance to catch your dream fish. To ensure a great and sustainable fishing experience, only a limited number of fishing permits are available each day.

During our fishing week, we visit various interesting hotspots depending on your preferred fish species. These can be in both Sweden and Finland. Besides the perfect fishing spots, the guide can also inform you about the biotopes and nature of Lapland. On a typical day, we leave after breakfast and start fishing. During the day, you enjoy lunch on the riverbank. When the guide finishes his six-hour shift, you can continue fishing. Especially in the evening, fishing can be quite productive as there is no night. Some spots are better fished from the shore, while others are better accessed by boat.

If you want to further increase your chances of catching salmon, you can hire a special guide/rower locally, who will take you on his boat to the best sections of the river in the middle of the current. This traditional method of fishing is called “harling” and is known to be a successful technique for catching salmon. The extra cost for a three-hour harling session is €180, payable on-site. Max two people, one fishes from the shore, and they switch after 1.5 hours. This should be booked in advance to ensure availability during your week. If fishing with two people, the guide takes one person in his boat, while the other fishes from the shore, and they switch after an agreed time.

For sustainable fishing, there is no salmon fishing from Sunday 18:00 to Monday 18:00. Fortunately, there are plenty of other species to fish for!

Accommodation This lodge is a family business run by the Malmström family, established in 1986. It is located on an island in the Muonio River, which forms the border between Sweden and Finland. The island’s name is Pitkäsaari (Long Island), and the village is called Muonionalusta. It has seven inhabitants, including Kaisu and Lars.

The lodge consists of a main building with a reception, restaurant, and sauna. There are also typical Swedish wooden “stugas,” holiday cabins painted red with white corners. The stugas are finished with plenty of wood inside and are comfortable and fully equipped. All stugas were completely renovated in 2018.

There are two types of stugas:

  • Two-person cabin with two beds for twin or double use, 25 m²
  • Four-person cabins of 46 m² with two bedrooms, each with two single beds, and a large living room with two additional beds. In total, these can accommodate six people, but for fishing, we use a maximum of four people.

All stugas include bed linen and towels and have comfortable hotel beds, separate shower/toilet, studio kitchen, and drying room. As a bonus, you get the view over the river and the two countries for free! There are five of each type of stuga available. For this group trip, we have three four-person stugas on option.

In addition to the stugas, there is a restaurant where all meals are served. Sometimes, lunch is served by the river or in the forest by a fire, which is a special treat. The restaurant offers a beautiful view of the river. All meals are prepared in our own kitchen, and we bake our own bread. We use as many local products as possible, such as elk, pork, beef, and fish from mountain lakes or the North Sea. Various local berries are picked from the nearby forests. Depending on the season, we use vegetables partly from our own garden and partly from the region.

Boat & Equipment To fish at this location, you need to bring good waders and matching boots. Also, a rain jacket, thermal underwear, and a fleece or woolen sweater/jacket are necessary. A warm and light hat is also handy. Be sure to bring DEET and a mosquito repellent jacket or net for your fishing cap. And, of course, bring your fishing net to land the fish.

All equipment must be brought by the anglers themselves. Detailed information about rods and lines will be provided in the travel documents, but for fly fishers, a double-handed #11 or #12 rod is best for the largest salmon in this river, which can weigh up to 30 kilos! For grayling, a #3 or #4 rod is best, and for pike, a #7 or #8 works well. So, if you want to catch them all, you need to bring a varied set of rods, reels, and lines.

For spin fishers, a 5 to 15-gram rod with a 2000 reel and 6-kilo dyneema line for grayling, a 15 to 40-gram rod with a 3000 reel and 10-kilo dyneema line for pike, and a sturdy 80 to 150-gram rod with a 5000 reel and 15 to 20-kilo dyneema line for salmon are best. More detailed advice on the best lures, flies, and streamers, etc., for your fishing trip will be provided after booking in your travel documents.

If you choose a day of “harling,” there are two types of boats available. Either the original wooden local boat of about 5 meters with a small 4-6 hp motor, or an aluminum boat of about 4 meters also with a small motor. Both types of boats have oars to row quietly and hold the boat in place.

Travel & Price The journey to this beautiful and impressive fishing location is quite simple. We arrange the flight to Rovaniemi airport on the start and end date, and we are picked up by our local partner.
